The book Because of Winn-Dixie was the Parents` Choice Gold Award Winner and was a New York Times bestseller. The story takes place in Naomi, Florida where a young girl named India Opal Buloni had just moved with her dad. She went by the name Opal. On a boring summer day Opal went to a store called Winn-Dixie to buy tomatoes, green peppers and onions for her dad. When she went into the store the customers were running around and screaming because a dog accidentally got loose in the store. She helped the storekeeper capture the dog. She didn’t want the dog to get into trouble so she told them that it was her dog. She thought of the name Winn-Dixie for him because that was the name of the store where she found him. When she gets home her dad said, “Where’s the vegetables? She said, “I accidentally brought a dog instead.” She was so happy when her dad said that she could keep him. Winn-Dixie was her only friend until little Sweetie Pie came up to Opal and said nice dog. Sweetie Pie, Opal and Winn-Dixie became friends. This was just the beginning. If you want to find out more you’ll have to read the book “Because of Winn-Dixie.” Opal was lonely when she first moved to Naomi because she missed her mom and she had no friends and no relatives there. She prayed every night that her mom would come back. When she met Winn-Dixie it made her feel happy to have one friend. Because of Winn-Dixie she made friends with other people and she learned not to be shy. Kate DiCamillo she is a very good and interesting writer. She uses sensory detail to help picture what happened in the story in your mind. She also uses a lot of dialog when the characters are talking to each other. When she describes Winn-Dixie she sometimes uses personification, she wrote that Winn-Dixie pulled back her lip and smiles. I like this story and anybody who likes sad stories with happy endings would like it too. I like this book and I would recommend it to a friend because it’s realistic fiction and it’s about dogs and making new friends. If I had to give this book a rating, I would give it 9 out of 10! It was really good and interesting.
